ABOUT CATHERINE THORNTON

I received my initial vocal training from my local church choir from the age of 8. I started to perform as a soloist from the age of 10 and sang in numerous choirs whilst growing up in South London. I studied piano, violin and voice and in 1992 graduated from Lancaster University with a degree in music.

In 1995 I won first prize for outstanding musical performance at Loughborough University, which was followed in 1996 by my first public recital. Since then I have sung as a soloist with York Opera - roles include Mrs Page from Otto Nicolai’s ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’, Dido in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas’ and 2nd Genii in Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute. I have also given song recitals in Yorkshire, Berkshire and London. Click here to read the York Press review of 'Dido and Aeneas'.

In 1993 I started to work with singers who needed help preparing for specific performances and auditions. This led me to teaching individuals and running workshops for a local choirs and amateur dramatic groups. I enjoyed teaching but wasn’t yet able to make it my full-time career.

Since settling in York in 2001, I have obtained a diploma in singing performance from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), successfully completed the Association of Teachers of Singing (AOTOS) teacher training course and the ABRSM course, ‘Being an Effective Teacher’. I am now a full-time singing teacher.

I teach from my dedicated music room in my house on the east side of York.

I am aware that individuals learn at different speeds and am particularly experienced in working with teenagers and adults. I aim to provide a supportive learning environment in which pupils can develop their vocal and musical skills at their own pace.

My students have a 100% pass rate with ABRSM and Trinity singing exams. I have successfully prepared singers for York Minister chorister auditions and for university and music theatre college auditions.

I firmly believe that singing should always be rewarding and fun!
